1973 Mercury Marquis

Nothing says '1973' quite like a huge, brown car from Lincoln-Mercury. We've already spotted a '73 Lincoln Continental, and guess what? It's brown! In the 90s, I read that this particular car, and similar Lincoln models, were the top choice for Illinois demolition derbies. Now that's some real Detroit iron. Here's another '73 Marquis on curbsideclassic.

  1. Interesting post, Joseph. Another favorite demo derby car, sad to say, is the Chrysler Imperial. Do a search for Imperial demolition derby on Youtube and you will find videos of events exclusively featuring this model.

  2. Hi Rainer,
Here's some more detail on those demolition derbies:
I don't know if they still have them, but in the 90s Illinois had demolition figure-eights. That's right: demolition derby at speed. Old Lincoln-Mercurys were considered the strongest competitors, but they were becoming scarce. So the track added a "metric cars only" rule. That meant all cars had to be 1979 and up, so the cars of choice became Cadillac Fleetwoods and Chevy Caprice wagons.
